LOCATION The Gargano promontory is, from a biological point of view, an island, separated from the rest of the peninsula from the plain of Tavoliere. It is rich in karst formations, such as caves and sinkholes. The promontory was originally completely covered by forests, now reduced to about 15 percent of the original surface, including the Umbra Forest.
